Excited to see some works from our collection featured in the wonderful exhibition 'Faces cachées' at La Manufacture de Roubaix (France). This collective exhibition questions our persistent fascination for the object of the mask and its countless manifestations. If you have the chance to visit, you will be able to admire 'Linda' (2022), 'Profile Black/Profile White' (2019), 'Gold - Luciano' and 'Gold - Lucilla' (2018) by Maurizio Anzeri, that will be out of the collection for a few months on this occasion.

"As a museum of memory and textile creation, La Manufacture de Roubaix brings together the work of twenty-one artists from eclectic cultural backgrounds around the theme of the mask and its multiple avatars. Curated by visual artist and photographer Christine Mathieu, the public is presented with an anthology of looks, detour and artistic appropriations through this practice of unprecedented revival: textile art.

Drawing their inspiration directly from the field, or from ethnographic museum collections, many artists explore the various functions of masks (disguise, covering, erasure...) to better question their identity and invent their own rituals. Following in the footsteps of Picasso and Giacometti, who in the last century revitalized their inspiration by drawing on the nourishing sap of Eskimo, African and Oceanian masks, these "neo-primitivists" in turn succumb to the seduction of these strange faces with their hypnotic power." Maurizio Anzeri (1964, Italy) lives and works in London (United Kingdom). He makes his portraits by sewing directly into found vintage photographs. His embroidered patterns garnish the figures like elaborate costumes, but also suggest a psychological aura, as if revealing the person’s thoughts or feelings. The antique appearance of the photographs is often at odds with the sharp lines and silky shimmer of the threads. The combined media gives the effect of a dimension where history and future converge.
